THE STORY BEHIND MEGANFABULOUSTHREADS
I’m Megan, a multidisciplinary textile artist, designer, and maker. The aim when starting MeganFabulousThreads was to sustainably handmake unique accessories and home decor.
All my products are made by me from start to finish in my home studio in West Berkshire. I design (unless stated), construct, do quality control, market, package and ship every product on my website.
Sustainability is central to my business. The materials I have, or those I source, often guide my creative process. I am passionate about the environment and do not like materials to go to waste, so I do what I can to reuse and recycle them into something new.
Each item is unique due to the limited fabric I am using, meaning making is often challenging yet exciting. I recycle or repurpose fabrics and materials, and I try to use every scrap as best as I can, nothing is thrown away!
All my packaging is plastic free and reusable or recyclable.
Everything I make is special and 1 of 1, with a low environmental impact and is handmade with love and to last.
When my yarns and fabrics aren’t the ideal colour for a project, I like to dye them with natural dyes such as onion skins, avocado, tea, and coffee.
In 2023 I graduated from Bath Spa University with a Bachelor of Arts degree with Honours in Textile Design for Fashion and Interiors. I used these 3 years to experiment with many techniques like screen printing, knitting, crochet, natural dyeing, applique, heat press and embroidery. I also continued making accessories alongside my degree. Most of the textile products in my shop have been made using these techniques. I make a large variety of products including textile wall hangings and home décor alongside jewellery and accessories such as bags.
My creative process for my handmade jewellery usually starts in a local charity shop. I look for interesting and unique beads on bracelets and necklaces that I can then take apart and repurpose as beautiful, handmade accessories. They are always one of a kind because I work with a limited number of beads and combine beads from different items. I use sterling silver 925, sterling silver 925 plated, or gold-plated earring hooks for my earrings.
